The Blog. Intro to my 3MEMS3 Robot Project.
Hi! My name is Michael, I’m an Engineering with Management student at Trinity College Dublin during there day and Formula Student design engineer after that. This blog will document all of my design work that I carry out and will be the place I give simple but in depth explanations of what I do.
The first order of business is to introduce my current project for my design module. Due to the level 5 lockdown in Ireland at the moment (the highest level) this whole module is to be completed online. The faculty, however, devised the solution to send us all a small, simple robot kit. We will assemble it and design modifications that allow it to complete a homemade obstacle course.

As I am yet to take delivery of this robot most of my plans are on hold, but there are many ways I can prepare. I plan to maximise the use of the tools available to me and implement some more experimental engineering practices in my designs but first, we must start with the basics.
The robot design requires only basic CAD skills to complete so I’ve made a model on SOLIDWORKS using approximate dimensions (I’ll refine the model when I receive the parts). The simple design does however provide a great platform to develop some more intricate mechanisms, I’m still in the planning stage and have some initial sketches to be shown in later blog posts.
This blog will naturally follow the developments I make so expect posts to be somewhat frequent. My next post will outline some of the prep I’ve done and reveal my CAD assembly. This project has a wide scope so each post will highlight a different aspect of it. Future blogs will cover the full range of projects I’m constantly immersed in, even in lockdown it’s good to keep busy.
Take care, Michael.
